Please note: this is a full time, limited-duration position. The position is for a nine (9) month assignment, with the potential to be extended to 12 months.


The Washington County Justice Court is seeking a skilled Court Clerk who will actively use their clerical support and friendly customer service knowledge to help individuals with matters before the Court. The Ideal Candidate thrives in a fast-paced court environment by prioritizing attention to detail with a high level of accuracy in their work, and excels at multi-tasking while remaining flexible within their assigned duties. They are responsible for providing customer service with patience and empathy, to individuals and agencies, by responding to inquiries and requests for information, explaining policies and procedures, and communicating fines and fees. Knowledge of the legal field and criminal justice system is a plus. 

Day-to-day activities for this position will vary, but include these important tasks:

  • Work on assigned duties to process tickets and judgments, with the ability to re-prioritize work based upon ever-changing deadlines.  
  • Share rules, policies, procedures, and program information with the public.
  • Process court information, files, and cases, which includes preparing, processing, and composing a variety of court documents.
  • Review and monitor on-going case files which includes identifying appropriate forms to be completed or received, monitoring case status, preparing letters to litigants, drafting suspensions, and processing court notices.  
  •  Perform office receptionist functions while representing the department in a professional manner.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

This position is required to work in person, Monday through Friday, from 8:15 AM to 5:15 PM.

Court Clerk is a working title. This position is classified as an Administrative Specialist II. Washington County organizes its positions into classifications, in which descriptions are typically written broadly. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or equivalent; AND
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience providing administrative or clerical support.
  • Possession of Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) or other applicable certifications may substitute for up to one (1) year of the experience requirement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 or more years in a legal or court environment.
  • Bilingual skills are not required but are highly encouraged. The applicant is required to be able to speak fluently and communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.  An additional $75/ per pay period for bilingual skills will be paid to qualified employees.  Pay periods are every two weeks.

  • Some positions may require oral and written fluency in another language.
  • Must pass a thorough background check prior to appointment.
