Washington County's Land Use & Transportation Department is now hiring an Operation Supervisor to join the team!

 

The Position
The Operations Supervisor directs and supervises crews and activities for the Bridge, Community Service, Drainage, Surface, Traffic Maintenance, and Vegetation work programs for Washington County. These programs involve planning and scheduling work throughout the year; guiding the work activities of the various crews and maintenance of County roads, bridges, traffic control devices, vegetation and drainage systems. They will also schedule equipment, labor and materials to accomplish various tasks that maintain the road right-of-ways. The Operations Supervisor may be responsible for directing work for as many as 19 staff and 3 separate work groups at any given time.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal Operations Supervisor candidate will  possess excellent verbal communication skills and feel comfortable leading a team of individuals.  They will also have the ability to provide basic written reports, as well as be able to interpret basic legal documentation. They must be able to problem solve, work independently and look for opportunities for improvement. Duties require the incumbent to exercise independent initiative and judgment to solve problems in order to accomplish desired goals and objectives.  Supervisors must be comfortable working with a diverse group of people, from different backgrounds and cultures.  

Additionally, the ideal candidate has:

  • Experience with construction and/or maintenance of transportation infrastructure projects or program work.  
  • Experience supervising work crews, handling personnel issues, supervising staff and coaching employees.  
  • Experience working with and/or around utilities, other government agencies and the general public.  
  • Ability to demonstrate how they have embraced diversity, equity and inclusion and how it plays an important role in an organization. 
  • Ability to process assigned work in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals and groups, be an effective collaborator in a team-centered environment, and work effectively under general direction from the Superintendent.
  • Ability to effectively deals with difficult customers and challenging situations.
  • Ability to look for ways to improve efficiencies and be willing to try new things.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent; AND Seven (7) years of increasingly responsible experience in road or bridge maintenance or a construction environment including: heavy and medium equipment operation, road construction techniques; drainage system construction and excavation techniques; traffic control; vegetation control and hazardous materials handling which includes a minimum of two (2) years lead or supervisory experience. OR
  • Associate Degree in management, communication, construction, engineering, or related program AND Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in road or bridge maintenance or a construction environment including: heavy and medium equipment operation, road construction techniques; drainage system construction and excavation techniques; traffic control; vegetation control and hazardous materials handling which includes a minimum of two (2) years lead or supervisory experience.

Additional Requirements:
